One of the most googled questions when pregnant is “can I dye my hair when pregnant?” so we are here with the good news that great hair is here to stay. With some precautions, colouring your hair can generally be done safely.

Here’s what you need to know to keep both you and your baby safe while maintaining your fabulous locks that should be looking thicker and glossier with all those pregnancy hormones.

Understanding hair dyes and pregnancy

Hair dyes contain various chemicals and the primary concern during pregnancy is whether these chemicals can harm your developing baby. Fortunately, the amount of chemicals absorbed through the scalp during the hair dyeing process is minimal. Most research suggests that it's unlikely to pose a significant risk to your baby. However, it’s always best to be cautious, especially during the first trimester when your baby’s development is at its most critical stage.

Tips for safe hair dying during pregnancy

Wait until the second trimester

If possible, wait until you’re past the first trimester before dyeing your hair. This is when the baby’s major organs and body systems are forming, and the risk of potential harm is higher.

Choose safe products

Speak to your colourist and get their advice. Opt for hair dyes that are free from ammonia, peroxide, and other harsh chemicals. Natural or organic dyes can be a good alternative. Always read labels and choose products with fewer chemicals to minimise exposure.

Go for highlights rather than full head colour

Consider highlights, balayage, or other techniques that don’t require dye to touch your scalp. These methods limit chemical absorption and still have your hair looking all kinds of fresh.

Ensure good ventilation

When dyeing your hair, make sure you’re in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling any strong fumes. If you’re going to a salon, let your stylist know you’re pregnant so they can take appropriate precautions.

Patch test

Pregnancy can make your skin more sensitive, so it’s a good idea to do a patch test before applying any dye. This will help you determine if you have any adverse reactions to the product and to be honest it's a requirement for most reputable salons anyway.

Choose a reputable salon that adheres to safety standards and uses high-quality products

Professional stylists are trained to minimise chemical exposure and can help ensure a safer dyeing process.

Embracing your natural hair

Of course, another option during pregnancy is to embrace your natural hair colour. Many women find that their hair becomes thicker and shinier due to all the hormonal changes. This can be an excellent opportunity to let your natural hair colour shine through and who knows you might find you prefer it.

Consult your midwife

If you have any concerns or questions about dying your hair, talk to your midwife.
