What Should I Pack In My Hospital Bag?

Updated: Jul 22, 2024

We asked 100 mums what the most important 15 items they packed in their hospital bag and the results are in. Below are all those essential items recommended by mums.

Birth plan

If you have one, bring copies for your midwife, doctor and birthing partner.

Comfortable clothing

Pack loose, comfortable clothing for yourself, including pyjamas or nightgowns and comfortable underwear. Think of things you can move freely in and not tight to your body and are soft against your skin.

Dressing gown and slippers/socks

Pack a few home comforts. Your favourite dressing gown or comfy slippers might make you feel more at home and relaxed during your hospital stay.

Toiletries

Bring your toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lip balm and any other personal hygiene items you may need. That first shower after giving birth can bring out so much emotion so treat yourself to a luxurious shower gel or silky shampoo.

Hair accessories

If you have long hair the last thing you need in labour is it getting in your face so pop some hairbands and clips into your bag for when you need them.

Snacks and drinks

Pack some snacks and drinks to keep your energy up during labour and afterwards. Top tip - pack a straw so that you don’t have to change position in labour to drink.

Nursing bras, breast pads and maternity pants

If you plan to breastfeed, bring nursing bras and breast pads. You will also want to pack some maternity pads or pants. They are thicker, softer and more absorbent than regular sanitary pads or pants.

Comfort items

Consider packing items that provide comfort to you, such as a favourite pillow, blanket, birth ball or affirmation cards.

Entertainment

Pack a book, magazines, or other forms of entertainment (don’t forget headphones) to help pass the time during labour.

Phone (and phone charger)

Your phone can have so many wonderful functions in the hospital. Entertainment system, Camera/video camera a place to store any important notes. Just don't forget to bring a charger!

Baby clothes

Pack a few outfits for the baby, including babygrows, vests, hats and socks.  Even if you anticipate going home within a few hours, it is always worth bringing some extra clothes for your newborn baby.  Don’t forget nappies. Pop a load into your bag - you can get through quite a few in those early days.

Baby blanket

One of the most gifted presents to pregnant women! Pack your favourite soft blanket to keep your baby warm.

Car seat

You'll need a car seat to safely transport your baby home from the hospital. It's worth remembering to fit this well ahead of the rush to hospital. Car seats can be tricky for beginners - don't underestimate it!

Important documents

Bring any necessary hospital paperwork such as your notes from your midwife.

Partner/friend/birthing partner

Suggest to your partner/friend/birthing partner that they pack a bag with their essentials as well.

If you’re in your third trimester you might want to start thinking about packing your hospital bag and keeping it somewhere safe near your front door.
